Bush just can’t stop with his pro-war nonsense. He can’t afford to end the war. His entire administration has been built on this war, and to bring the troops home would cancel his only bargaining chip for Americans’ approval. Instead, he rants about staying the course and not giving in to The Enemy, and attacks any Democrats who speak out against the war as unpatriotic partisan cowards.
In order to keep what public support that he still has, he continues to put on a brave face that has nothing to do with those who are actually in danger. It’s easy for him to say that the insurgents won’t shake his will when his will is only getting other people killed, and not himself. When he says, “We’re doing the right thing,” he means that he’s doing the right thing for his own interests and for the Republican party this November.
The fact of the matter is, he’s playing right into the terrorists’ hands. The terrorists in the Middle East want us out of their region because they hate America and the individual freedoms it theoretically values. By continuing the war instead of admitting he did the wrong thing, Bush keeps making the country that he represents look like a self-righteous bully that makes enemies with even the United Nations. America has never been more unpopular in the world, and that will only help the extremists in the long run. The longer this war drags on, the longer the world community will harbor anti-American sentiments. America will continue to lose its clout and alienate its supposed allies until our only real power is our nukes.
