Ignorance is not Always Bliss

Chris Buttars is a State Senator from Utah. He is on the warpath against homosexuals. In his guise as warrior, he has mounted a campaign to outlaw gay-straight student alliances in schools. He plans to introduce a bill this year banning such clubs from meeting on school property.
Speaking recently at the Eagle Forum held in Taylorsville on the Redwood campus of Salt Lake Community College, Buttars put his small-minded bigotry on display. “This gay issue is everywhere – they’re getting into everything. Their definition of morality is to have no morality.” He went on to tell the crowd that gays and lesbians are targeting “your kids.”
When are these bigots going to realize that a heterosexual person can no more be made gay, and that a gay person can no more be made straight, than a possum can be turned into a hummingbird?
Buttars spoke of the alleged necessity for people to “stand up and be counted or risk loosing the war against the gay lifestyle.”
He feels he needs to be in a “war” against “the” gay lifestyle? Has he talked about this with a competent therapist?
He said that LGBT rights groups are winning court battles by portraying gays as victims and by characterizing their opponents as bigots, narrow-minded and out-of-touch with reality. For good measure, he threw in his opinion that gays harbor diseases at a higher rate than the general population.
It is interesting that this State Senator comprehends that there are people who consider his position one of bigotry. Does he not understand the meaning of that word? A bigot is a person whose irrational prejudices are so strong that he will use those irrational prejudices as a justification for depriving a minority group of its rights.
I’m repeating that definition: A bigot is a person whose irrational prejudices are so strong that he will use those irrational prejudices as a justification for depriving a minority group of its rights.
Does that sound like any kind of a position for a State Senator in the United States of America to be taking?
