The headlines read like an optimists dream this morning. The Washington Post boasts:
Kaine Triumphs Over Kilgore for Va. Governor
Alito Signals Reluctance on Roe
Kan. Alters Science Curriculum
GOP Leaders Urge Leak Probe
Senators Question Oil Industry
Kaine won the Governor’s seat as a Democrat and a Catholic. He ran in Virginia, a wealthy, typically Protestant, Republican state. Kudos to Kaine!
The Alito article makes it quite clear through repeated, albeit secondary source interviews, that Supreme Court Judge nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr. does not intend to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Even though he opposes abortion personally, the law has stood for many years and been repeatedly upheld in court. This stability makes him reluctant to second-guess the original order. I don’t suppose the fact that polls showing the majority of Americans support Roe vs. Wade, hurt any either.
Kansas was the first state to legalize the teaching of “Intelligent Design” formerly known as creationism, in public schools. Kansas’ decision to rescind its previous decision took place after Tuesday’s ousting of eight school board members.
The Leak Probe and Oil Industry articles highlight recent democratic representative’s drive to finally take republican policies to task.
The Detroit News rejoices with GOP defeats in Virginia, N.J. sting Bush. This article also refers to Kaine’s election in Virginia and to the election of Democratic Senator Jon Corzine in New Jersey. Bush had made a last minute campaign stop to advocate for Kilgore in Virginia, but it did not help. Kaine won by a distinct margin. It looks like the Democrats have the “bush” surrounded now.
And ABC New tells us Azerbaijanis Rally, Demand Free Elections. Azerbaijan, a key Mediterranean oil nation, appears to have adopted the democratic promise we export.
It looks like we might actually be gaining some ground finally, at home and abroad. Won’t it be nice?
