Americans still have some sort of block in their minds against Democrats. What is it? Are we really so caught up in our ” holier than thou” attitude that we can’t get over the fact that a President needs a sexual ego boost now and then too? Are we prepared to ruin our country over such narrow minded Puritanism?
According to this summer’s Gallop Poll results, the top four Democratic candidates for president in 2008 are, in order of preference, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, former North Carolina senator John Edwards, and Delaware Senator Joe Biden. However, when asked whether they would vote for a republican or a democrat, pairing the top candidates in each party, voters inevitably sided with the republican.
Although Hillary is the overwhelming leader in the democratic poll, and voters clearly intend to vote for her in the presidential primary, voters do not seem quite ready for a female president. Matched against any republican male, she always comes out on the low end. Frankly, John Kerry and John Edwards didn’t do any better than Hillary. Only the Marist College Poll has matched her head to head against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the only female Republican in the polls, where she managed a sufficiently positive margin. The Marist College, Democracy Corps, and Westhill Partners/Hotline Polls did put her ahead of Jeb Bush, thank goodness, but he isn’t really a forerunner in the campaign.
Only the Ipsos-Public Affairs poll of December 2004 showed Democratic leanings greater than Republican intent, 48-44%, not much of a margin. After everything the Republican Party has done to alienate the American people, how can we still be so predominantly GOP minded? Is it that we lack strong leaders? Is it that we don’t brag about ourselves the way they do? Is it that they control the news media?
Are we going to let the Republican political war-machine run right over us again in 2008? What are we going to do about it? Won’t someone step up and say, “I’ve got ego. I’ve got money. I’ve got courage and an appealing way with words. I can beat those Republicans at their own game. I’m your next president.” Scott, you hobnob with the rich and powerful. Got any recommendations?
As a democratic woman, I would love to see Hillary take the White House. As a realist, I just don’t see it happening. As vice president maybe, but bigotry still reigns supreme in this country. And if Hillary is our best hope for 2008, then I’m afraid we must resign ourselves to another Republican president. Maybe I should follow my daughter’s post Bush reelection advice and immigrate to Sweden where they treat people like people, but I’m sure they have their problems too.
